Aryeh Shander

Aryeh Shander, M.D., FCCM, FCCP is Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Englewood Hospital & Medical Center in Englewood, NJ. He is also Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, Medicine & Surgery at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and Executive Medical Director of the New Jersey Institute for the Advancement of Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Shander lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of topics related to blood conservation, volume resuscitation, acute anemia therapy, surgical blood management, acute normovolemic hemodilution and artificial blood and bloodless medicine and surgery. His publications have appeared in Anesthesia & Analgesia, CHEST, Clinics of Anesthesia, Critical Care Connections, Current Opinion of Hematology, The Lancet, the journal Transfusion, Transfusion Alternatives in Transfusion Medicine, Critical Care Medicine & Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He is the author of multiple book chapters and contributes to textbooks on blood management. Dr. Shander is a reviewer for the journal Chest, Transfusion, Critical Care Medicine and Anesthesia and Analgesia. Dr. Shander is also Co-Editor of Perioperative Transfusion Medicine 2nd Edition 2006 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Contributor and Contributor and Editor of Perioperative Blood Management: A Physician's Handbook, 1st Edition by American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) 2006 and Basics of Blood Management 1st Edition 2007 by Blackwell.

He serves as a board member and executive committee member for the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) and is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Shander is a founding member of the Board of Directors and serves as the President for the National Anemia Action Council (NAAC). Dr. Shander is also a founding member of the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists (ASCCA) where he serves on committees, both locally and nationally, and in addition, is a member of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) where he serves as chair of committee on transfusion. In 1997 Dr. Shander was recognized by Time magazine as one of America's "Heroes of Medicine".

Dr. Shander received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, where he also served as Chief Resident. Additional postgraduate training included a fellowship in critical care medicine and a residency in anesthesiology, both at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Shander is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Anesthesiology and Hyperbaric medicine.
