Daniel Eric Furst, M.D. is the first to occupy the Carl M. Pearson Chair of Rheumatology at UCLA, beginning January 2002. Dr. Furst has held various positions during his career including Director of Arthritis Clinical Research at Virginia Mason Research center where he was responsible for developing arthritis and immunology clinical research, membership on the Arthritis Advisory Committee for the FDA, Director of Inflammatory and Pulmonary Clinical Research at Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis), Assistant Professor at UCLA, Associate Professor at the University of Iowa and Chairman of the Program Meetings Committee of the ACR.
Dr. Furst graduated cum laude from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he received his medical degree, and where he completed his medical internship and residency. His fellowship in rheumatology was completed in UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA and his fellowship in clinical pharmacology was completed at UCSF Medical Center (Moffitt Hospital), San Francisco, CA.
Dr. Furst's areas of research interest include the clinical pharmacology of anti-rheumatic drugs and biologics for rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases and the pathophysiology and treatment of systemic sclerosis. While at UCLA, his mentor was Professor Harold Paulus. Dr. Furst has authored over 400 peer-reviewed articles, books, chapters, and reviews and is a frequent invited speaker at international meetings. His involvement in clinical, professional and national activities is broad and he is affiliated with many professional societies. He is a current Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, Fellow in the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and American Federation for Clinical Research. Dr. Furst also serves on the Board of Directors for both the Arthritis Foundation and the Southern California Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation (where he is currently Chairman of the Board).
