Jeffrey S. Berns is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Associate Chief and Director of the Renal Fellowship Program for the Renal-Electrolyte and Hypertension Division, and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1981, and completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1984. He then attended a fellowship in nephrology at Yale University from 1984-87.
He is currently on the editorial board of Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, an assistant editor of Seminars in Dialysis, editor of the dialysis section of UpToDate, and deputy editor of the ASN's Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP). Dr. Berns has been a long-standing member of the National Kidney Foundation K/DOQI Anemia Workgroup and includes anemia of chronic kidney disease and its treatment one of his primary clinical and research interests. He was recently appointed vice-chair for guidelines and commentaries for KDOQI.
