Dr. Ershler is Senior Investigator and Deputy Clinical Director, Intramural Research Program, National Institute on Aging (NIH). He also serves as Medical Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Aging and Geriatric Medicine (IASIA), a Washington, DC non-profit which coordinates, among other things, two clinical research groups, the National Geriatrics Research Consortium (NGRC) and the Geriatric Oncology Consortium (GOC).
Dr. Ershler earned his medical degree at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University (Syracuse) and completed his internship and residency in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin. He remained at the University of Wisconsin to complete clinical and research training in Hematology and Medical Oncology. From 1996 through 2006, Dr. Ershler also maintained a medical practice (Hematology/Oncology) in Northern Virginia.
Dr. Ershler was Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont, and Associate and full Professor at the University of Wisconsin before he assumed his current positions. Dr. Ershler also is the immediate past editor of the Journal of Gerontology and the current editor of Clinical Oncology Alerts. He has been honored with several awards including the Allied Signal Research Excellence Award, Geriatric Leadership Award from the National Institute on Aging and selection as one of “America’s Best Doctors” from American Health Magazine for the past four editions. He has served on numerous scientific review boards and national committees. Among these he currently is Research Director for the National Anemia Action Council, and a member of External Advisory Board for the University of Pittsburgh Comprehensive Cancer Center , the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Seattle), and the University of California at Los Angeles Older American Independence (Pepper) Center.
An active clinical investigator, Dr. Ershler’s current areas of research interest include immune and inflammatory mechanisms in the pathogenesis of cancer, anemia and frailty. He has authored over 250 scientific publications and edited four books.
