Drs. Aryeh Shander*, Elizabeth Donegan, Jerrold Levy and Linda Shore-Lesserson will lead the panel discussion Transfusion Update 2009 at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting in New Orleans, LA on October 17th from 7:30 a.m.- 9:30 a.m.
Transfusion medicine has changed remarkably in the past few years, and is poised for even more change in the years to come. The experts on this panel will provide an overview of the most important changes that effect anesthesia and perioperative care.
Following the discussion, attendees should be able to:
- Review and synthesize the evolving literature about blood transfusion and outcomes
- Understand the Modern View of the Coagulation Cascade, and how this model applies to clinical medicine
- Learn how the evolving indications for blood component administration will be applied in anesthesia
- Learn about the drugs that modulate platelet function, and to appreciate the nuances in managing patients on these drugs
