Effective Treatment for Anemia and Bleeding Caused by Stomach Ulcers

NAAC Q&A Published: November 18, 2005

Question:
In mechanical ulcers of the stomach created by hiatus hernias not responding to proton pump inhibitor with bleeding and anemia, is there a place for recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) in addition to iron therapy?

NAAC Expert Response:

By NAAC Gastroenterologist Bruce R. Bacon, MD.
This may be a possible indication for rHuEPO, but the problem really is the need to fix the underlying problem. Oftentimes, these patients are benefited by surgery. Remember, before giving rHuEPO, it is necessary for patients to be iron replete or the rHuEPO will not be effective in correcting the anemia.
