Effectiveness and Tolerability of Iron Peptonate Preparations

NAAC Q&A Published: October 21, 2009

Question
What are the data on the absorption and efficacy of iron peptonate preparations that are marketed as neutriceuticals?

NAAC Expert Response
Iron peptonate is marketed as a formulation that leads to more tolerable iron preparation. However, there is no published information in the peer-reviewed medical literature addressing this claim. Since these formulations can include other vitamins and iron side effects are related to amount of elemental iron available for absorption, we are skeptical of iron preparations that are marketed as having limited toxicities. Of note, many of the iron petonate preparations report having lower elemental iron than iron sulfate, and as a result one would expect lower side effects by giving less iron. The best approach remains starting with an inexpensive generic form of iron such as iron sulfate and adjusting the dose and administration based upon patient tolerance.
