Studies have indicated perioperative use of beta-blockers decreases cardiac morbidity and mortality, yet rates of increased stroke and total mortality have also been seen in these trials. Given that considerable percentages of this patient population exhibits prepoerative anemia and experiences significantly low hemoglobin levels, the patient’s cardiac response is central for their recovery and clinical outcome. To examine these effects, Beattie et al conducted a study to determine if beta-blockage would limit the cardiac reserve to compensate for acute surgical anemia. [ full review ]
