Cancer Association Asks Medicare to Reopen Anemia Drug Reimbursement Policy

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has expressed concern over revised reimbursement policy for anemia drugs, repeatedly asking the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to reopen some provisions of the policy. ASCO contents areas of concern include:

  • Stop treatment coverage for hemoglobin levels above 10 g/dL
  • Allowance for one-time dose escalation of 25% for hypo-responders or non-responders
  • Discontinued treatment if a patient’s hemoglobin level rises more than 1 g/dL within and two-week period
